In depth: Our Mandarin Courses for Business in Portsmouth
1:1 and Group Mandarin Courses in Portsmouth
Mandarin language courses by SIMON & SIMON have been honed down to give you the greatest progress and value for money.
While we offer learning options on both a 1:1 and group basis, we find that most of our learners benefit most from 1 to 1 language training courses.
Group training offers great value for money, but the commitment and organisation to ensure the participants all show up at the same time every week is a trade-off. We recommend no more than 6 participants in a group otherwise the quality of the learning will drop dramatically for all learners.
Portsmouth Course Management
Every SIMON & SIMON language course is overseen by one of our highly experienced Account Managers, all of whom are multi-lingual.
At the start of your Mandarin language course we will send you a profile on your trainer, followed by a Course Plan and relevant course materials, and then a Progress Report after every 40 hours of training. You will also receive a copy of our quarterly newsletter, Breaking the Language Barrier, featuring a superb prize draw and invaluable weblinks to language learning sources.

About Mandarin
Standard Mandarin is a standardized form of spoken Mandarin, based on the Beijing dialect of Mandarin Chinese. Standard Mandarin is the official language of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC, also known as Taiwan), as well as one of four official languages of Singapore. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. About one-fifth of the world’s population, or over one billion people, speaks some variety of Mandarin as their native language. Linguists often view Mandarin as a language family, though owing to China’s socio-political and cultural situation, and the fact that all spoken varieties use one common written system, it is customary to refer to these generally mutually unintelligible variants as “the Mandarin language”.
About Portsmouth
Portsmouth is a city located in the ceremonial county of Hampshire on the south coast of England. Portsmouth is the United Kingdom’s only island city, being mainly located on Portsea Island. The City of Portsmouth and Portsmouth Football Club are both nicknamed Pompey. As a significant naval port for centuries, Portsmouth is home to the world’s oldest dry dock still in use and also home to some famous ships, including HMS Warrior and Lord Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory. Although smaller than in its heyday, the naval base remains a major dockyard and base for the Royal Navy and Royal Marine Commandos whose Headquarters resides there. There is also a thriving commercial ferryport serving destinations on the continent for freight and passenger traffic. The nickname Pompey is thought to have derived from shipping entering Portsmouth harbour making an entry in their logs as Pom. P. in reference to Portsmouth Point. Navigational charts also use this abbreviation. The Spinnaker Tower is a striking recent addition to the city’s skyline. It can be found in the redeveloped former HMS Vernon, an area of retail outlets, restaurants, clubs and bars now known as Gunwharf Quays. The Portsmouth Urban Area covers an area with a population well over twice that of the city of Portsmouth itself, and includes Fareham, Portchester, Gosport, Havant (which includes the large suburbs of Leigh Park), Lee-on-the-Solent, Stubbington and Waterlooville.
Assess Your Mandarin Level
The table below is based on recognised language levels used by various academic institutions across the European Union. A highly motivated student attending weekly sessions with their Mandarin language trainer can expect to move from one level to another after 50 hours providing they also commit to a similar number of hours of self-study.
Of course, some people find learning languages easier than others, and some students will have more opportunities to practise Mandarin in the course of their work and leisure, so these factors also need to be considered when trying to assess how long it will take to move from one level to another.
