About Italian

Italian is a Romance language spoken as a native language by about 70 million people in Italy, Malta, San Marino and parts of Switzerland, Croatia, Slovenia and France. Many native speakers are native bilinguals of both standardised Italian and regional varieties. Italian derives diachronically from Latin and is the closest national language to Latin. Unlike most other Romance languages, Italian retains Latin’s contrast between short and long consonants. As in most Romance languages, stress is distinctive. In particular, among the Romance languages, Italian is the closest to Latin in terms of vocabulary. Lexical similarity is 89% with French, 87% with Sardinian, 85% with Catalan, 82% with Spanish, 78% with Rhaeto-Romance and 77% with Romanian.

About Birmingham

Birmingham is a city in the West Midlands, England, and holds the largest population outside of London, in the UK. Developed from a medium-sized market town, Birmingham grew to international prominence during the 18th century, at the heart of the industrial revolution.

By 1791, Birmingham, was recognised as “the first manufacturing town in the world”. Birmingham holds the second largest metropolitan economy in the UK, with a GDP of $121.1bn in 2014. Birmingham’s six universities make it the largest centre for higher education outside of London in the country. Birmingham has vibrant and influential grassroots in the art, music, literary and culinary scenes.

Birmingham is home to an extensive canal system, which was completed by the 1820s and gave greater access to natural resources and fuel for industries, Birmingham has more miles of canal than Venice. Birmingham’s economy today is dominated by the service sector, which in 2012 accounted for 88% of the city’s employment. Birmingham as a settlement dates back to the Anglo-Saxon era, but there is substantial evidence to suggest a short-lived influx of population occurred between 1700BC and 1000BC, this could have possibly been caused due to conflict or immigration in the surrounding areas.

Birmingham is the youngest city in Europe, with under 25’s accounting for nearly 40% of its population. Although a major city during the industrial revolution, Birmingham is home to some 8,000 acres of parks and open space. An estimated 40% of the UK’s jewellery is produced in Birmingham.

Assess Your Italian Level

The table below is based on recognised language levels used by various academic institutions across the European Union. A highly motivated student attending weekly sessions with their Italian language trainer in Birmingham can expect to move from one level to another after 50 hours providing they also commit to a similar number of hours of self-study.

Of course, some people find learning languages easier than others, and some students will have more opportunities to practise Italian in the course of their work and leisure, so these factors also need to be considered when trying to assess how long it will take to move from one level to another.
