Blackfriars is a Central London borough, located at the south-west corner of the City of London.

The name dates back to 1317 when it was referred to as Black Freres, which translates to the Black Brothers from French. The name was derived from the black cappa worn by Dominican Friars. They moved their priory from Holborn to the area between River Thames and Ludgate Hill in 1276.

Historically, the borough was used for important occasions of state such as meetings of the Parliament and the Privy Council, as well as the location used for a divorce hearing in 1529 between Catherine of Aragon and Henry VIII. The priory was closed in 1538 during Henry’s Dissolution of the monasteries.

About Greenwich

The Royal Borough of Greenwich (also known as simply Greenwich) is London borough located in south-east London. The borough was officially formed in 1965 by the combining the former Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich with part of the Metropolitan Borough of Woolwich to the east, and it got its name from the historic town of Greenwich.

The Borough reached international fame as the official location of the Prime Meridian, on which all Coordinated Universal Time is based. The Prime Meridian runs through Greenwich, while the Greenwich Observatory has been designated as the assembly point for the Greenwich Mean Time (also known as GMT). Due to this, in 2012, Greenwich was listed as a top ten global destination by Frommer’s. It was the one and only UK destination to be listed.

Furthermore, to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, Greenwich became a Royal Borough on the 3rd of February 2012.

Assess Your French Level

The table below is based on recognised language levels used by various academic institutions across the European Union. A highly motivated student attending weekly sessions with their French language trainer in Greenwich can expect to move from one level to another after 50 hours providing they also commit to a similar number of hours of self-study.

Of course, some people find learning languages easier than others, and some students will have more opportunities to practice French in the course of their work and leisure, so these factors also need to be considered when trying to assess how long it will take to move from one level to another.
