About English

English has roots in the west-Germanic languages spoken by the Anglo-Saxons in the 5th century AD. This spread through the medieval kingdom of Northumbria into parts of what is now Scotland. With its increasing usage came development and it underwent several notable changes before becoming the version of English which we speak today. English was introduced to the world via the British Empire and its political, economic, scientific, cultural, and military influence in the 18th century. Through similar influence, the United States helped spread English throughout the world and popularise its usage. Now, English is widely spoken as a first or second language in many countries, and is commonly used as the lingua franca for international communication. Such is its popularity that English is the third-most natively spoken language in the world, following Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

About York

York is a beautiful and historic city located in North Yorkshire at the meeting point of the Foss and Ouse rivers. The walled city is one of Britain’s oldest, having been established by the Romans in 71 AD under the name Eboracum. This would be the capital of Britannia Inferior, a Roman province, and later the kingdom of Northumbria.

York’s progress has been steady since the Middle Ages, when the town became renowned for its wool trading. In the 1800s, confectionary was added to the list of York’s products, and the town became noted for its railway network. More recently, it is York’s consistent tourism and its health services and university which have helped the town grow and maintain its proud link to Britain’s history.
