1:1 and Group English Courses in Stoke-on-Trent

With SIMON&SIMON, you can choose between 1:1 or group English lessons. Group lessons are excellent value and give you more opportunities for conversations as you are learning. About English

English arose from the west-Germanic languages spoken by the Anglo-Saxon settlers in the medieval kingdom of Northumbria. As it spread, it underwent several changes, eventually evolving into the form that we speak today. This was introduced to the world in the 18th century thanks to the British Empire and its influence on politics, culture, science, warfare, and economics. Through influence on similar fields, the USA helped further the spread of English in the 20th century. As a result, English is widely spoken as a second language in many European and Commonwealth countries, and is the common language of communication amongst speakers of differing languages. In fact, English follows only Mandarin Chinese and Spanish in terms of global native speakers.

About Stoke-on-Trent

Stoke-on-Trent is a city in Staffordshire, England, which forms a linear conurbation almost 12 miles (19 km) long, with an area of 36 square miles (93 km2). Together with the Borough of Newcastle-under-Lyme Stoke forms The Potteries Urban Area. This, together with the rural Staffordshire Moorlands area, forms North Staffordshire, which in 2001, had a population of 457,165. The conurbation continues to be polycentric, having been formed by the federation of six originally separate towns and numerous villages in the early-20th century. The settlement from which the federated town (not a city until 1925) took its name was Stoke-upon-Trent, because this was where the administration (and chief mainline railway station) was located. After the union, Hanley emerged as the primary commercial centre in the city, despite the efforts of its rival, Burslem.

The three other component towns are Tunstall, Longton, and Fenton. Stoke-on-Trent is considered to be the home of the pottery industry in England and is commonly known as The Potteries. Formerly a primarily industrial conurbation, it is now a centre for service industries and distribution centres.

Assess Your English Level

The table below is based on recognised language levels used by various academic institutions across the European Union. A highly motivated student attending weekly sessions with their English language trainer in Stoke can expect to move from one level to another after 50 hours providing they also commit to a similar number of hours of self-study.

Of course, some people find learning languages easier than others, and some students will have more opportunities to practise English in the course of their work and leisure, so these factors also need to be considered when trying to assess how long it will take to move from one level to another.
