About English

The roots of the English language extend back to the 5th century AD, having originated from the west-Germanic languages of the Anglo-Saxons. In its early form, English spread across the kingdom of Northumbria into parts of what is now Scotland. The spread of English took a global scale in the 18th century, where the British Empire popularised the language through its cultural, economic, scientific, political, and military influence. The United States’ impact on the same fields in the 20th century further perpetuated English, helping establish it as a common means of discourse amongst international speakers. Spoken widely as either a first or second language, the native English speakers throughout the world are only outnumbered by speakers of Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

About Preston

Located on the north bank of the river Ribble, the town of Preston is actually made up of an urban settlement and its surrounding civil parishes. In 2002, Preston became England’s 50th city, achieving this status in Queen Elizabeth’s 50th year as monarch. The city, and the commuter area which surrounds it, had a population of over 420,000 people according to the last census report.

Preston is steeped in history, having been named by the Angles. In Old English, the word ‘Preston’ means ‘priest’s settlement’. By the middle ages, the parish of Preston was still significant, as was the surrounding market town. But, the history of Preston is believed to date back to Roman times, based on evidence of a nearby Roman road. In more recent years, the town of Preston played a large part in the Industrial Revolution through engineering and industrial plants. It is also well-known for its textile manufacturing, which helped its expansion and contributed to Preston becoming the city it is today.
