About English

English evolved from the languages spoken by the West Germanic settlers that came to Britain in the 5th century AD. It underwent several stages of development before finally becoming what we recognise as modern English. This language then spread across the globe in the 18th century as a result of the British Empire and its political, military, scientific, colonial, and cultural influence. This was perpetuated by the US’s influence in the mid to late 20th century. The spread of English under these global powers has meant that many EU and commonwealth countries speak English as either a native or second language, as do many other countries around the world. In fact, English is the language of international communication and its native speakers are only outnumbered by the native speakers of Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

About Milton Keynes

Milton Keynes is a large town in Buckinghamshire, in the south east of England, about 49 miles (79 km) north-west of London. It is also the administrative centre of the Borough of Milton Keynes. It was formally designated as a new town on 23 January 1967, with the design brief to become a ‘city’ in scale. Its 89 km2 (34 sq mi) area incorporated the existing towns of Bletchley, Wolverton and Stony Stratford along with another fifteen villages and farmland in between. It took its name from the existing village of Milton Keynes, a few miles east of the planned centre. At the 2001 census the population of the Milton Keynes urban area, including the adjacent Newport Pagnell, was 184,506, and that of the wider borough, which has been a unitary authority independent of Buckinghamshire County Council since 1997, was 207,063 (compared with a population of around 53,000 for the same area in 1961). The Borough’s population is currently estimated to be over 230,000.
