1:1 and Group English Courses in Middlesbrough

At SIMON&SIMON we cater for both individuals and groups. Students taking individual (1:1) lessons tend to make faster progress due to our ability to absolutely cater to their needs. However, groups do allow for more conversational diversity and are of excellent value. To ensure that we are able to give each member of the group enough attention, we do limit our groups to a maximum of six students.

About English

English has roots in the West Germanic languages spoken by the Anglo-Saxons of the 5th century in what was then the medieval kingdom of Northumbria. As the language spread across Britain it underwent several phases of development, eventually evolving into the language we now call English. This language was spread across the globe in the 17th century under the British Empire’s influence on politics, colonialism, economics, military advancements, and culture. It was further popularised mid-way through the 20th century thanks to similar influence from the United States. As a result, English is now widely spoken throughout the globe as both a native and a second language, and is the common language of international discourse. It is also the third most natively-spoken language after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

About Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough is a large town situated on the south bank of the River Tees in North East England, that sits within the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire. The local authority is Middlesbrough Borough Council. Historically part of the North Riding of Yorkshire, in 1968 the town became the centre of the County Borough of Teesside, which was absorbed by the non-metropolitan county of Cleveland in 1974. In 1996 Cleveland was abolished, and Middlesbrough became a unitary authority, within the ceremonial county of North Yorkshire.

Middlesbrough is different from the other districts on Teesside, as the borough is almost entirely urbanised, thus making it the largest town in terms of area and population, but the smallest district. However, the areas of Eston, Grangetown, Normanby, Ormesby, and South Bank in the neighbouring borough of Redcar and Cleveland, are also part of the Middlesbrough agglomeration. To the northeast of Middlesbrough lies the Tees Estuary, approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) away. A few miles to the south lies the edge of the North York Moors National Park. Teesport, the UK’s third largest port, lies 3 miles (4.8 km) to the east, and Durham Tees Valley Airport lies 8 miles (13 km) to the west, near Darlington.
