In depth: Our English Courses in Cambridge

1:1 and Group English Courses in Cambridge

At SIMON&SIMON we offer both group and individual lessons. Students involved in group lessons receive great value for money and benefit from conversational opportunities. We also limit our groups to 6 members to ensure that each student is able to spend time with the tutor. Students taking our individual lessons, however, tend to make slightly faster progress due to our ability to cater to their needs.

English Course Management

Your SIMON&SIMON English course will be kept on track by one of our highly capable, multi-lingual account managers. Your account manager will send you important documents, such as your course plan and course content, as well as a profile on your tutor. Also, after every 30 to 40 hours of training, your account manager will send you a progress report.

Cambridge English Course Schedules

We run our courses in Cambridge throughout the year, Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 6 pm, allowing you to choose the schedule that works best for you. Our students tend to see the best results by taking at least 1 lesson per week, with many opting to take more. We also run an intensive course from Monday to Friday for 6 hours per day, equating to 30 hours per week. This can be arranged at your place of work or your own home.

English Course Content

We tailor the content of your course to your specific needs, based on our assessment of your strengths and weaknesses. We also take your personal goals into account, such as your purpose for learning English. You may, for example, wish to learn Business English to expand your career, or you may want to learn conversational English for the purpose of travel or relocation. We look at your unique circumstances and then create a course that will best help you reach your goals.

English Language Examination Courses

In addition to English tutoring, we are able to offer preparation assistance for any upcoming English examination you may have. A testament to the experience and proficiency of our tutors, our students have achieved a 95% pass-rate to date. In order to make the process as convenient as possible, we are also able to assist with the registration and administration of the examination, as well as the issuing of your results following the examination.

About English

English is actually a derivative of the West Germanic languages spoken in the 5th century in what was then the medieval kingdom of Northumbria. This early form evolved over the centuries to become the language we speak today. This was spread across the globe in the 18th century under the British Empire, and was made even more popular by the influence of the United States in the 20th century. Today, English is the common language of communication amongst speakers of different languages, and is spoken in many Commonwealth countries as either a first or second language. Its native speakers are outnumbered only by speakers of Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

About Cambridge

The city of Cambridge is a university town and the administrative centre of the county of Cambridgeshire, England. It lies in East Anglia about 50 miles (80 km) north-by-east of London. Cambridge is at the heart of the high-technology centre known as Silicon Fen – a play on Silicon Valley and the fens surrounding the city. Cambridge is well known as the home of the University of Cambridge. The university includes the renowned Cavendish Laboratory, King’s College Chapel, and the Cambridge University Library.

The Cambridge skyline is dominated by the last two buildings, along with the chimney of Addenbrooke’s Hospital in the far south of the city and St John’s College Chapel tower in the north. According to the United Kingdom Census 2001, the city’s population was 108,863 (including 22,153 students), and the population of the urban area (which includes parts of the neighbouring South Cambridgeshire district) is estimated to be 130,000.

Assess Your English Level

The following table represents the various stages of English development, as accepted by leading language institutions across the European Union. You may use this table to determine your current level of English proficiency. With weekly lessons by an experienced English tutor in Cambridge, and an equal amount of time devoted to self-learning, you may expect to progress one level for every 50 hours of training.

It is important to remember that this table is only a guide. Some students have more opportunities to practice and study, and some simply take to languages faster than others. It is thus crucial that you treat this table as a projection only, and understand that your personal progression might be faster or slower than this forecast.
