About English

English is a derivative of the West Germanic languages spoken in the medieval kingdom of Northumbria by the Anglo-Saxon settlers. Through the centuries, this language developed into the form of English we now speak. It was spread across the globe under the British Empire in the 18th century, and perpetuated by the influence of the US in the 20th century. Its native speakers are now only outnumbered by those of Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, and it is widely spoken as a first or second language in many European and Commonwealth countries. English is also the language most commonly used for communication between speakers of differing languages.

About Blackpool

Blackpool is a seaside town and unitary authority in Lancashire, England. Situated along the coast of the Irish Sea, it has a population of 142,900, making it the third-largest settlement in North West England behind Manchester and Liverpool. It lies 40 miles (64 km) north-west of the city of Manchester, and less than 30 miles (48 km) north of Liverpool City centre.

Blackpool is the fourth most densely populated local authority district of England & Wales outside Greater London. Blackpool rose to prominence as a major centre of tourism during the 19th century, particularly for the inhabitants of northern mill towns. Blackpool is believed to get its name from a historic drainage channel (possibly Spen Dyke) that ran over a peat bog, discharging discoloured water into the Irish Sea, which formed a black pool (on the other side of the sea, “Dublin” (Dubh Linn) is derived from the Irish for “black pool”). Another explanation is that the local dialect for stream was “pul” or “poole”, hence “Black poole”.

Assess Your English Level

The following table is based on the levels of English as recognised by the European Union’s prominent language institutions. You can use this to assess your current level of English. A committed student could potentially move up one level for every 50 hours of tutored training and an accompanying 50 hours of home studying and practice.

This, however, is merely a guide. Your progress might be faster or slightly slower than this projection. This is because people learn at different rates, and some people have more opportunities to practice. Bear this in mind when determining your progress.
