In depth: Our Cantonese Courses in London

1:1 and Group Cantonese Courses in London

Our Cantonese Courses in London can either be arranged on a 1:1 or group basis. While the majority of our clients will choose to opt for a 1:1 Cantonese Course, group sessions prove to be great value for money. Although group sessions are good value, they will require the commitment of all those involved, and participant numbers should not exceed 6 candidates per course. About Cantonese

Cantonese is a variety of Chinese that is the lingua franca of Guangdong and a few other areas in the vicinity such as Guangxi. It is from southeastern China, in the area historically known as Canton, now known as Guangzhou. It is also the main language spoken in Hong Kong, Macau and the Pearl River Delta region in China. It is also spoken by many overseas Chinese around the Southeast Asian region such as in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Cantonese is mutually unintelligible to Mandarin due to differences in grammar, lexicon, and pronunciation, even though there are some common vocabulary. Most significant in differences are that Mandarin and Cantonese may often be translated differently from spoken to written – most Cantonese speakers are able to write out the full Cantonese vocabulary, and so they sometimes used a non-verbatim formalised written form which looks very similar to Mandarin. Therefore, sometimes there is text that looks similar between the two varieties but are pronounced differently.

Cantonese is the prestige dialect of Yue Chinese, but the term can also refer to the entire Yue branch of Chinese, including the Taishanese dialect which is actually mutually unintelligble with Cantonese. There are approximately 80 million of those who speak the closely related Yuehai dialects that we refer to as Cantonese.

About London

London is the capital city of England and the United Kingdom. London has the biggest population within Europe with over 8.6 million residents. However, this is not the largest population London has seen, with the current population equivalent to the population 76 years ago. To cope with the extreme population of London, there are approximately 10000 miles of sewage pipes underneath London.

London has been a major settlement for two millennia. Founded by the Romans, who called it Londinium, London retains its square-mile mediaeval boundaries where you will find today’s financial and business hub of London. London is a leading global city, with its strengths in the arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, professional services, research and development, tourism and transport all contributing to its prominence as a city. London is the world’s largest financial centre alongside New York and has the largest city GDP in Europe.

London is home to 43 universities which forms the largest concentration of higher education institutions in Europe. In 2012, London became the first city to host the Summer Olympic Games three times. London is also leading the way in transport and is home to London Heathrow airport which sees the largest amount of international passengers pass through it compared to any other airport in the world, and is also home to the London Underground which has annual passenger numbers of over 1.25 billion.

Assess Your Cantonese Level

The table below is based on recognised language levels used by various academic institutions across the European Union. A highly motivated student attending weekly sessions with their Cantonese language trainer in London can expect to move from one level to another after 50 hours providing they also commit to a similar number of hours of self-study.

Of course, some people find learning languages easier than others, and some students will have more opportunities to practise Cantonese in the course of their work and leisure, so these factors also need to be considered when trying to assess how long it will take to move from one level to another.
