About Cantonese

Cantonese is a variety of Chinese that is the lingua franca of Guangdong and a few other areas in the vicinity such as Guangxi. It is from southeastern China, in the area historically known as Canton, now known as Guangzhou. It is also the main language spoken in Hong Kong, Macau and the Pearl River Delta region in China. It is also spoken by many overseas Chinese around the Southeast Asian region such as in Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Cantonese is mutually unintelligible to Mandarin due to differences in grammar, lexicon, and pronunciation, even though there are some common vocabulary. Most significant in differences are that Mandarin and Cantonese may often be translated differently from spoken to written – most Cantonese speakers are able to write out the full Cantonese vocabulary, and so they sometimes used a non-verbatim formalised written form which looks very similar to Mandarin. Therefore, sometimes there is text that looks similar between the two varieties but are pronounced differently.

Cantonese is the prestige dialect of Yue Chinese, but the term can also refer to the entire Yue branch of Chinese, including the Taishanese dialect which is actually mutually unintelligble with Cantonese. There are approximately 80 million of those who speak the closely related Yuehai dialects that we refer to as Cantonese.

About Basildon

Basildon, with its close proximity to London, is a commuter hot-spot. It is located far enough away from central London that property prices are not drastically inflated, yet close enough that the trip into London can be made in well under an hour.

This commuter-friendliness means that Basildon is an important part of big-city business in the United Kingdom. But, it is not just its proximity to London that makes Basildon an important town for business. The town itself is committed to increasing the potential of its local businesses through ongoing marketing.

2010 saw Basildon begin a marketing push focussed on improving the town’s business infrastructure. One of the first notable steps in this push was the addition of a Hollywood-style sign which adorns one of Basildon’s green hills.

Standing 5 feet tall, the letters recall the glamour of Los Angeles’ original icon, which gives that Californian city an undeniable draw. Through the homage Basildon pays to that landmark through its own sign, this UK town is asserting itself in a constant effort to increase its business dealings independent of neighbouring London.

Whether you intend to establish yourself within this rising business town or make the daily commute to the commercial hub that is London, you need a business English course that will ensure you are able to operate effectively at this level.

Assess Your Cantonese Level

The table below is based on recognised language levels used by various academic institutions across the European Union. A highly motivated student attending weekly sessions with their Cantonese language trainer in Basildon can expect to move from one level to another after 50 hours providing they also commit to a similar number of hours of self-study.

Of course, some people find learning languages easier than others, and some students will have more opportunities to practise Cantonese in the course of their work and leisure, so these factors also need to be considered when trying to assess how long it will take to move from one level to another.
