Six Nations rugby is different to a lot of sporting events, as it doesn’t take place in just one country, matches are played across all of the six nations! An excellent excuse for a trip away!

If you’re heading to any of the 2024 Six Nations fixtures and need to learn a language fast of the country you’re visiting, you’re in the right place.

History of the Six Nations

Six teams compete in an annual rugby competition known as the Six Nations: England, France, Ireland, Scotland, Italy, and Wales. But things weren’t always like that. Can you guess which teams were in the”Home Nations Championship” in 1883, when there were just four teams competing?

Yes, it was the four countries that at the time comprised the United Kingdom: England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Before Wales managed to win many times between 1905 and 1909, England and Scotland dominated the first two years. Wales and Scotland had actually won a staggering 11 championships apiece by the end of the Home Nations era. Phenomenal!

Professional rugby suffered along with many other sports during the 1940s and 1946s while World War II raged across Europe. The Home Nations merged with France to become the Five Nations upon its return in 1947. We’re making progress!

Even though it took them some time to get going, France put up a great fight once they did. Prior to the tournament’s rebranding in the new millennium, France dominated it in the 1960s and 1970s, taking home a record eight titles. This time, Italy entered the games, extending the competition to become the Six Nations as it exists today.

Now the biggest rugby competition, the Six Nations brings together the finest of Europe and is played only in the Northern Hemisphere. The Millennium Stadium, Twickenham, Stade de France, the Aviva Stadium, and Stadio Olimpico are the venues where games are played throughout the continent.
