In depth: Our Mandarin Courses for Business in Sheffield

Mandarin Teaching Approach & Experience

Private individuals and professionals in companies all over the UK have profited from undertaking a Mandarin Language Course with SIMON & SIMON. Averaging 15 years of experience, our native Mandarin speaking qualified teachers construct your course so that your individual requirements are met, no matter what your level of experience. Our Mandarin teachers receive excellent feedback from our clients. A profile, containing information about the Mandarin teacher’s background and experience, is sent to each student before the Mandarin lessons start.

Modern language teaching is now approached much differently to how you might remember learning languages in school. The experience is now much more fun and rewarding. The Communicative Approach, where your Mandarin teacher will conduct your lessons almost entirely in Mandarin means that progress is made from your very first lesson. Soon, you will have such confidence that using Mandarin in a social or business setting will be no problem.

1:1 and Group Mandarin Courses in Sheffield

Our Mandarin courses are usually offered by our clients as 1:1 training for their employees. Group sessions, however, are also available and can be excellent value for money. Planning is required so that participants all meet at the same time each week, and we recommend that numbers are kept to 6 or less. 1:1 Mandarin lessons at Sheffield mean that you will have your individual needs, weaknesses and strengths catered for, so that your progress is quicker.

Mandarin Course Management

A multi-lingual Account Manager with extensive experience is responsible for each SIMON & SIMON Mandarin language course. A profile on your trainer, Course Plan and course materials will be sent to you when you start your Mandarin course. After every 40 hours of training you will receive a Progress Report. We will also send you Breaking the Language Barrier, our quarterly newsletter, which contains a wonderful prize draw and valuable language learning resource weblinks.

Intensive Mandarin language courses can be arranged in residential centres abroad or in the UK, or on clients’ premises for 30 hours per week, 6 hours a day Monday to Friday.

Mandarin Course Content

You may want to further your ability to use Mandarin in negotiations and meetings or better your comprehension and pronunciation abilities. Whatever goals you may have, our experienced Mandarin language trainers will tailor your Mandarin course so that your goals can be quickly met.

About Mandarin

Standard Mandarin is a standardized form of spoken Mandarin, based on the Beijing dialect of Mandarin Chinese. Standard Mandarin is the official language of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC, also known as Taiwan), as well as one of four official languages of Singapore. It is one of the six official languages of the United Nations. About one-fifth of the world’s population, or over one billion people, speaks some variety of Mandarin as their native language. Linguists often view Mandarin as a language family, though owing to China’s socio-political and cultural situation, and the fact that all spoken varieties use one common written system, it is customary to refer to these generally mutually unintelligible variants as “the Mandarin language”.

About Sheffield

Sheffield is a city and metropolitan borough of South Yorkshire, England. Its name derives from the River Sheaf, which runs through the city. Historically a part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, the city has grown from its largely industrial roots to encompass a wider economic base.

The population of the City of Sheffield is 534,500 (2008 est.) and it is one of the eight largest regional English cities that make up the English Core Cities Group. During the 19th century, Sheffield gained an international reputation for steel production. Many innovations were developed locally, including crucible and stainless steel, fuelling an almost tenfold increase in the population during the Industrial Revolution.

Sheffield received its municipal charter in 1893, officially becoming the City of Sheffield. International competition in iron and steel caused a decline in traditional local industries during the 1970s and 1980s, coinciding with the collapse of coal mining in the area. The 21st century has seen extensive redevelopment in Sheffield along with other British cities.

Sheffield’s gross value added (GVA) has increased by 60% since 1997, standing at £9.2 billion in 2007. The economy has experienced steady growth averaging around 5% annually, greater than that of the broader region of Yorkshire and the Humber.

Assess Your Mandarin Level

The table below is based on recognised language levels used by various academic institutions across the European Union. A highly motivated student attending weekly sessions with their Mandarin language trainer in Sheffield can expect to move from one level to another after 50 hours providing they also commit to a similar number of hours of self-study.

Of course, some people find learning languages easier than others, and some students will have more opportunities to practise Mandarin in the course of their work and leisure, so these factors also need to be considered when trying to assess how long it will take to move from one level to another.
