We consistently receive outstanding feedback from our clients about our English tutors. Each student is sent a specific profile on the experience and background of their English tutor before they start their course of lessons.

Maybe your only knowledge of studying languages is what you remember from school. Modern language teaching has recently changed to be much more entertaining and rewarding. Your English lessons in Derby will be carried out almost completely in English. This is the Communicative Approach and by this method you will notice progress from the initial lesson. You will soon feel confident and able to use English to communicate in various business and social situations.

Our English language courses are available on both a 1:1 and group basis, but the majority of our clients offer 1:1 English training to their employees. However, with careful planning, group training can offer great value for money, provided there is a real commitment from the participants to get together at the same time every week. We strongly recommend you keep group numbers to 6 or less for these types of courses to be successful. Those learning English in at Derby on a 1:1 basis will naturally make much faster progress, as the course will be designed around their individual needs and focus on their particular strengths and weaknesses.

English Course Management

Each of SIMON & SIMON’s English languages courses is the responsibility of a multi-lingual, very experienced Account Manager. When you start your English course, you will receive your trainer’s profile. Thereafter we will send you a Course Plan, materials for the course and, after each 40 hours of training, a Progress Report. Our quarterly newsletter, Breaking the Language Barrier, will also reach you, and contains a prize draw as well as the weblinks of language learning resources.

SIMON & SIMON has arranged English language courses for clients in numerous locations, and with our global network of language trainers we can organise a English language course for you wherever you are - in almost any major city in the UK, Europe and beyond. The vast majority of our English lessons take place at our clients' offices, removing the need for you to travel, but English lessons can take place in your home if that is more convenient. We can also arrange full-time residential English language courses for you - just contact our office for information on available destinations.

Derby English Course Schedules

We run English language courses in Derby all year. Most of our students participate in no less than one 90-minute lesson per week, but many students will participate in more if work commitments allow. Weekend Courses can be facilitated, and our English weekday courses run from Monday to Friday, from 8am to 8pm. Intensive English language courses are also available and can be run at the client’s premises or a residential centre in the UK or overseas. These courses take place over 6 hours a day, Monday through Friday, for 30 hours per week.

Your English language course’s content will be tailored to your experience and goals. Prior to the course, we will assess your English language level and speak to you comprehensively about the areas and subjects you are interested in. Students may be complete novices who need everyday English conversational skills or have more proficiency in English and wish to be able to discuss various business topics such as banking or finance more fluently. Students may desire to bolster their English for negotiations and meetings or focus on gaining better listening, pronunciation and comprehension skills. No matter what your needs, you can be confident that our very experienced English language trainers will work with you on a English language course that is tailored for you so that you quickly meet your goals.

English Language Examination Courses

English examination preparation for business or other examinations can also be assisted with. Our students boast a 95% rate of passing such examinations, proving the value of our policy of English teachers in Derby with experience above the average. SIMON & SIMON also organises registration and administration of English examinations as well as issuing results certificates as a part of our service.

The table below is based on recognised language levels used by various academic institutions accross the European Union. A highly motivated student attending weekly sessions with their language trainer can expect to move from one level to another after 50 hours providing they also commit to a similar number of hours of self-study.

Of course, some people find learning languages easier than others, and some students will have more opportunities to practise the language in the course of their work and leisure, so these factors also need to be considered when trying to assess how long it will take to move from one level to another.

Back to top of English Courses Derby

English is a West Germanic language that arose in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England and spread into what was to become south-east Scotland under the influence of the Anglian medieval kingdom of Northumbria. Following the economic, political, military, scientific, cultural, and colonial influence of Great Britain and the United Kingdom from the 18th century, via the British Empire, and of the United States since the mid-20th century, it has been widely dispersed around the world, become the leading language of international discourse, and has acquired use as lingua franca in many regions. It is widely learned as a second language and used as an official language of the European Union and many Commonwealth countries, as well as in many world organizations. It is the third most natively spoken language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese and Spanish.

Derby is a city and unitary authority in the East Midlands region of England. It lies upon the banks of the River Derwent and is located in the south of the ceremonial county of Derbyshire. In the 2001 census, the population of the city was 233,700, whilst that of the Derby Urban Area was 229,407. According to the 2001 census, Derby was at that time the 18th largest settlement in England, measured by urban area. The city has Roman, Saxon and Viking origins. The Roman camp of 'Derventio' was probably at Little Chester/Chester Green. The site of the old Roman fort is at Chester Green. Later the town was one of the 'Five Boroughs' (fortified towns) of the Danelaw. The popular belief is that the name 'Derby' is a corruption of the Danish and Gaelic Djúra-bý, recorded in Anglo-Saxon as Deoraby "Village of the Deer". This popular belief is asserted by Tim Lambert who states, "The name Derby is derived from the Danish words deor by meaning deer settlement" without reference or proof. However some assert that it is a corruption of the original Roman name 'Derventio'. The proven origin of the name "Derby" would seem to be elusive.
